What is Oncology ?

Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention , diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Cancer survival has improved with 3 main components –

1. Reduce exposure to risk factor

2. Improved screening of cancer patients

3. Improvement in treatment.

Signs and symptoms:-

Breast cancer – lump in breast and axilla associated with or without ulceration in or bloody nipple

Endometrial cancer – bleeding per vagina

Cervix cancer – bleeding after sexual intercourse

Ovarian cancer – non specific symptoms like abdominal dyspepsia

Lung cancer – persistent cough, breathless ness , blood in sputum , hoarseness in voice .

Head and neck cancer – non healing ulcer or growth, lump in neck.

Brain cancer – persistent headache, vomiting, loss of consciousness, double vision

Thyroid cancer – lump in neck

Esophageal cancer – painful swallowing predominantly with solid food, weight loss

Stomach cancer – vomiting, dyspepsia, weight loss

Colon cancer – bleeding per rectum, alteration of bowel habits.

Liver cancer – jaundice, pain and mass in rt upper abdomen

Pancreatic cancer – weight loss jaundice

Skin cancer – non healing ulcer or growth, mole with sudden increase in size or irregular border

kidney cancer – blood in urine , abdominal lump

bladder cancer – blood in urine

prostate cancer – urgency , hesitancy and frequency while passing urine , body pain

testis cancer – swelling of testis , back pain , dyspnoea

bone cancer – pain and swelling of bones

lymphoma – fever , weight loss, drenching night sweats which continues B symptoms, , lump in neck

blood cancer – bleeding gums , bleeding nose, bleeding manifestation s .

Treatment –

Treatment depends upon size and type of cancer .

Surgery , Chemotherapy and radiation are the procedure followed by all oncologist to treat cancer at various levels.

What Ayurveda has written since 5000 BC about cancer -

In Ayurveda we have the reference for cancer . According the ancient Indian scientist Acharya charaka and Acharya Sushruta cancer is described as inflammatory or non inflammatory swelling mentioned as ‘Granthi’ (minor neoplasm or ‘Arbuda’ (major neoplasm). The nervous system (vata or air ) , the venous system (pitta or fire ) and the arterial system (kapha or water ) are three basic of Ayurveda and very important for normal body function . In malignant tumors all three systems get out of control and lose mutual coordination that causes tissue damage , resulting critical condition. Tridosha causes excessive metabolic crisis resulting in proliferation . The main goal of Ayurvedic therapy is to find the ultimate cause of an illness while the therapeutic approach of Ayurveda is divided into four categories as Prakritisthapani chikitsa (health maintenance), Rasayana chikitsa, (restoration of normal function), Roganashani chikitsa (disease cure) and Naishthiki chikitsa (spiritual approach).[3] Commonly used herbal decoctions reported in Ayurveda are made of multiple herbs possessing great potential for a cancer cure; scientifically these formulations work on multiple biochemical pathways and influence different organ systems all together and nourish the body as a whole by supporting body‘s deference systems.

Andrographis paniculata, Annona atemoya, Phyllanthus niruri, Piper longum, Podophyllum hexandrum, Tinospora cordifolia, Semecarpus anacardium, Vitis vinifera, Baliospermum montanum, Madhuca indica, Pandanus odoratissimum, Pterospermum acerifolium, Raphanus sativus, Barleria prionitis, Prosopis cineraria, Amorphopallus campanulatus, Oxoxylum indicum, Basella rubra, Flacourtia romantchi, Moringa oleifera, Ficus bengalensis, Curcuma domestica, Allium sativum, Calotropis gigantean, Datura metel, Hygrophila spinosa, Juniperus indica, Moringa oleifera, Nigella sativa, Picrorrhiza kurroa, Rubia cordifolia, etc. are various plants having scientific evidence of anticancer property.

Nine plant-derived compounds including vinblastine, vincristine, etoposide, teniposide, taxol, navelbine, taxotere, topotecan and irinotecan have been approved for use as anticancer drugs. 10-hydroxycamptothecin, monocrotaline, d-tetrandrine, lycobetaine, indirubin, colchicinamide, curcumol, curdione, gossypol and homoharringtonine are few more plant-derived compounds .
